Cracked a Crown? We Can Help

Here’s how to handle a broken dental crown.

The dental crowns and bridges that our Edison, NJ, dentists Drs. Saul and David Frechtman provide are made from incredibly lifelike and durable material. Of course, there are certain problems that can lead to a cracked or damaged crown. If this has happened to you here’s what you should do,

Call Your Dentist

This is the very first thing you should do. Let our Edison, NJ, dentist know that your crown or bridge is damaged or has fallen off. Based on the seriousness of the situation we may ask you to come into the office right away. If you aren’t in pain and the crown is only cracked then you may choose to just schedule an appointment in the coming days; but if there is pain or the crown has completely fallen off, then this usually requires urgent care.

Alleviate Pain

If you are noticing pain, which can happen if the tooth underneath the crown is exposed, you may want to take pain medication to ease your symptoms until you can come into our office for treatment. You may also choose to apply a cold compress to the face, especially if you experience swelling.

What should I expect?

When you come into the office for a cracked or broken crown or bridge, we will immediately replace these restorations. Since both crowns and bridges are custom-made to fit your mouth, we will first need to take measurements of your teeth.

Then, these measurements will be sent to the dental lab so they can get to work crafting and making your new crown. In the meantime, we will place a temporary crown over the tooth to protect it while your permanent crown is being made. It can take 2 weeks to get your new crown, and once it’s made you will come back into the office for a fitting.

How long is a dental crown designed to last?

Most crowns are made from porcelain, so they are strong and long-lasting. With the proper care, they can last up to 15 years. However, problems such as teeth grinding, crunching down on something hard (e.g. the pit of an olive or a popcorn kernel) or a traumatic injury/blow to the face can lead to a damaged crown. At some point, your crown will need to be replaced, and it’s important to turn to your dentist as soon as possible when that time comes.

If you are dealing with damaged crowns or bridges, our Edison, NJ, dental team can provide you with immediate care. Call Frechtman Family Dental of Edison at (732) 548-8600 for an urgent care appointment.
