Dental crowns offer an excellent way to repair damaged teeth or improve the appearance of your smile. Edison, NJ, family dentists Drs. dental crownsSaul and David Frechtman of Frechtman Family Dental of Edison share some information on crowns and explain how you can benefit from these versatile restorations.

What are crowns?

Crowns, also called caps, cover your teeth on all four sides. Their hollow design allows them to easily slip over your teeth after the teeth have been shaped and reduced in size. Crowns are usually made of materials that closely resemble tooth enamel, such as porcelain, ceramic, resin and porcelain-fused-to-metal.

Crowns prevent dental disasters

It's an awful feeling to bite into a sandwich and realize that a tooth has broken or crumbled. Although your teeth are normally very strong, they can weaken if you have a crack, received a root canal or have a very large filling. Fragile or brittle teeth can also be inherited or may become a problem as you grow older.

Adding a crown to an at-risk tooth prevents your tooth from breaking or falling apart. Once the crown is in place, it absorbs the strong biting forces you produce when you chew, which protects the tooth underneath.

Fractured teeth are easily restored with crowns

Crowns not only protect fragile teeth, but also restore teeth that have already broken. Fractured teeth affect your appearance and make chewing an unpleasant or difficult experience. Before you receive your crown, we'll make a mold of your teeth in our Edison office to ensure that your new crown looks right at home in your mouth. You'll go home with a temporary crown and return to the office in about two weeks to receive your permanent crown. After it's in place, you'll be able to chew normally, and no one will suspect that your tooth was ever damaged.

Crowns offer cosmetic benefits

Do you have a tooth that doesn't quite blend in with the rest of your smile? The problem isn't uncommon. Fortunately, it can be corrected by topping the tooth with a crown. Crowns are often used to improve the appearance of crooked, twisted, pointed, discolored, bumpy or short teeth.

There is a tooth loss solution that will have you smiling again in no time.tooth loss

Did you know that 120 million Americans are missing at least one permanent tooth while 36 million Americans face total tooth loss? So, if you are dealing with tooth loss you aren’t alone. While we know that you must feel frustrated with this issue, our Edison, NJ, family dentists Drs. Saul and David Frechtman are here to make sure you get the tooth replacement that’s right for you. Find out how dental implants can help.

What is a dental implant?

If you were to see a dental implant up close it would look like nothing more than a very small metal post or screw. You may wonder, “How on earth is this metal structure supposed to replace a missing tooth?” The purpose of an implant is to take over the role of your missing tooth’s roots. Even though the roots are hidden under the gums they are still a crucial part of a healthy smile.

How is an implant placed?

Once we have determined that you could benefit from dental implants, our Edison, NJ, dentist will schedule your first minor surgical procedure. This procedure is done right here in our office. During this procedure, we will open up the gums to reveal the jawbone so that we can place the implant.

How does an implant work?

Once the implant is placed into the jawbone we will sew up the gums and give your mouth ample time to heal. During this time, which usually takes a couple of months, the jawbone and tissue will begin to regrow. As it grows around the implant it will naturally fuse together with the titanium restoration to become one structure.

Since a dental implant is the only restoration that actually bonds with natural bone and tissue you’ll have a restoration that is designed to last several decades (and potentially the rest of your life, with the proper oral care).

Frechtman Family Dental in Edison, NJ, strives to provide you with only the very best in dental care. Whether you need to schedule an orthodontic evaluation for your child or you want to talk to us about tooth replacement options, we are here to help you make the right decision regarding your oral health.

Want a better-looking smile? Cosmetic dentistry is aimed at creating a positive change to your smile. Dr. Saul Frechtman and Dr. David Frechtman at Frechtman Family Dental in Edison, NJ, offer a range of cosmetic procedures. Read on to learn about the important benefits of dental crowns, bridges and implants.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are "caps" that are placed over the teeth. Dental crowns are used to restore cracked, badly decayed, weakened, chipped and damaged teeth. Dental crowns can improve your smile and make your damaged teeth stronger. They can also restore your ability to speak and help you chew better. Dental crowns restore full function of your damaged and weakened teeth.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are used to replace missing teeth. A bridge is made up of two or more dental crowns for the teeth on the sides of the gap and one or more false teeth in between. Once a tooth is lost, the existing teeth begin to shift at an accelerated rate. A fixed bridge can help prevent the existing teeth from drifting out of place. With a fixed bridge, you can also improve the appearance of the teeth that you are crowning.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots made of titanium. They are placed into your jaw to hold artificial teeth. Missing teeth can ruin a nice smile. Implants will restore your smile and enhance your appearance. Missing teeth can also cause a cascade of oral health problems such as bone loss and shifting of existing teeth. With implants, you will avoid developing these problems.

If you have missing teeth, dental implants can drastically change your smile. While the only option used to be dentures or dental bridges, dental implantsimplants are the result of great strides in modern dentistry and are the most permanent and effective form of tooth replacement. The Types of Dental Implants

  • Implant-Supported Dentures: Implant-supported dentures use a full arch of dentures to replace your missing teeth. However, rather than using suction or gravity to stay in place, permanent metal dental implants hold them in your mouth. The denture simply clicks into the implants, which provide a sturdy and stable foundation. Implant-supported dentures can be either permanent and non-removable or removable.
  • Single Tooth Replacing Implants: Replacing a single tooth requires only one implant. The implant permanently holds a porcelain prosthetic tooth in place.
  • Multiple Tooth Replacing Implants: Replacing multiple teeth requires the help of a porcelain dental bridge. Two implants on either side of the gap in question holds the bridge in place. This method allows your surrounding healthy natural teeth to remain intact and does not require their support to hold the bridge in place.

Dental Implants in Edison
Dental implants grow into the jawbone beneath your gums. Due to their unique placement, implants require that patients have minimal bone atrophy. Atrophy is the degradation of the bone due to lack of stimulation. When a patient has significant bone atrophy, they may require a bone graft to rebuild the bone before placing dental implants. Additionally, patients should be in good general and dental health and able to undergo general anesthesia if necessary. Your dentist can help you determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants at an in-office consultation.
