Dental emergencies can be scary, and what you need is relief with fast solutions. Whether you’re dealing with tooth pain or trauma to your teeth or mouth, emergency dental care from our Edison dentists at Frechtman Family Dental can help! When faced with a dental emergency or severe tooth pain, many people are at a loss of what to do.  Just like in a medical emergency, it is important to treat dental trauma promptly to avoid complications and risk permanent damage.

Although dental accidents are not life threatening, getting immediate care from your emergency dentist in Edison, NJ is necessary to help preserve the tooth and the smile's overall appearance. A common dental problem requiring emergency care is sudden tooth loss or breaks, usually caused by trauma or a fall. Even small breaks or fractures in the tooth can cause nerve injuries through bacteria buildup in the soft pulp inside the tooth, potentially resulting in permanent damage if left untreated.

Common Dental Emergencies

The most common problem we see patients for is a painful tooth. Usually, the patient had not been to a dentist for routine care and was unaware there was a problem tooth needing care.

Other emergency dental issues include:

  • Broken or cracked tooth/teeth
  • Permanent tooth knocked out
  • Partially dislodged tooth
  • Object caught between teeth
  • Filling has become loose or fallen out
  • Broken dental restoration
  • Dental infection
  • Broken jaw

Chipped or Fractured Teeth

Most chipped or fractured teeth can be repaired either by reattaching the broken piece or by placing a tooth-colored filling. If a significant portion of the visible portion of the tooth is broken off, an artificial crown or “cap” may be needed to restore the tooth. Injuries in the back teeth often include fractured cusps, cracked teeth, or a more serious split tooth. If cracks extend into the root, root canal treatment and a full coverage crown may be needed to restore function to the tooth. Split teeth may require extraction.

Dislodged Teeth

During an injury, a tooth may be pushed sideways out of or into its socket. Your Edison dentist will reposition and stabilize your tooth. If the tooth root has been damaged, a root canal may also be necessary.

Knocked-Out Teeth

If a tooth is completely knocked out of your mouth, time is of the essence. The tooth should be handled very gently, avoiding touching the root surface itself. If it is dirty, quickly and gently rinse it in water. Do not use soap or any other cleaning agent, and never scrape or brush the tooth. If possible, the tooth should be placed back into its socket as soon as possible. The less time the tooth is out of its socket, the better the chance for saving it. Once the tooth has been put back in its socket, your dentist will evaluate it and will check for any other dental or facial injuries. If the tooth has not been placed back into its socket, your Edison, NJ emergency dentist will clean it carefully and replace it. A stabilizing splint will be placed for a few weeks. Depending on the stage of root development, your dentist may start root canal treatment a week or two later.
